Director Identification Numbers (DINs) are now in force for new Company Directors from April 2022
What are DINs?
In 2021 the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) and Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) announced plans to implement Director Identification Numbers – a 15-digit number provided by ABRS application and commonly referred to as a DIN.
The move attempts to regulate company directors, curb illegal phoenix activities, and prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.[1] In November 2021, ABRS opened applications for company directors to get ahead in compliance with the emerging requirement.[2]
Do I need to apply now?
As of 5 April 2022, the grace period for new company directors ended and DINs are now mandatory for first-time company directors. You can apply for a DIN now if you are a director or plan to become one. Those company directors who were appointed for the first time between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022 had 28 days from the date of the appointment to submit an application to ABRS.[3] If you were appointed in the last few weeks, ensure that you apply before this 28-day window lapses.
When do longstanding company directors need to apply?
If you are an existing company director who has held appointment since at least 31 October 2021 (or before the introduction of the DINs), then you will have until 30 November 2022 to apply.
